Paarl Rock is about 500 million years old and is one of the largest granite outcrops in the world. The neighboring Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve - with its ancient wild olive trees, rock candlewoods, Proteas and other endemic "fynbos" vegetation thriving amongst giant boulders - offers a variety of scenic, accessible strolling and about 30 km of trails for hiking and mountain biking, just above the busting town.

In 1975, one hundred years after the founding of GRA, the soaring Afrikaanse Taalmonument (Language Monument) was unveiled on Paarl Mountain. Celebrating the contributions of diverse tongues, this iconic landmark has become a signature of Paarl, affording a magnificent panoramic vista over the valley, with Table Mountain visible in the distance.

Visit Butterfly World, the largest tropical butterfly park in Africa where butterflies fly freely in a beautiful covered garden, go to Drakenstein Lion Park a private funded facility where captive born predators find a lifetime care, have a look at Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm where you can touch a baby croc and witness the feeding during a guided tour.


For those who are interested in history:

Towards Franschhoek lies the former Victor Vester Prison (now Drakenstein Correctional Facility), which grabbed international headlines when Nelson Mandela walked to freedom through its gates in 1990, to make his first public appearance in 27 years. Here a bronze sculpture of this internationally revered statesman can be viewed and we can organize a visit to "Madiba House" by appointment.

Paarl Museum

reflects the history of Paarl Valley and facilitates an interesting and in-depth look at the town's rich and varied cultural heritage.

Anglo Boer War Monument

The ABW Monument unveiled at Labprie Wine Estate on 17 Sept. 2005, focuses on the struggle for freedom and justice of the Cape Afrikaners and other colonists who provided support, or were sympathetic to, the Boers in the Transvaal and Free State Republics during ABW (1899-1902).

Huguenot Gedenkskool

was initiated in 1883 by the Afrikaans community in Dal Josafat to make sure that their children could be educated in Afrikaans, their mother tongue. Some Of SA's greatest poets, authors, scientists and linguists were educated here.

Strooidak Curch & Het Gesicht Church

Strooidak church, built in 1805 and Het Gesicht, the old slave church, built in 1813 in Paarl are two of the oldest churches in South Africa which are still in use. Visitors can tour the Strooidak Church by appointment. Het Gesicht can also be hired for weddings and other services.

De Poort Heritage Village

This existing new Paarl tourism venue can be visited to see heritage artisans at work, see a forge in operation, try out the skill of a blacksmith and watch a cooper and farrier.

Drakenstein Heemkring

archive is housed in De Oude Woning in Paarl. The collection includes valuable manuscripts, photographs, books, genealogical records and research on the original Huguenot farms.

Main Road -12000 Meters of History

At just under 12 kilometers, Paarl Main Road is one of the longest in the country and a delightful electric mix of architectural styles such as Dutch, Victorian, Georgian, Edwardian and Art Deco. It houses a myriad of trendy cafes, restaurants, wine-bars, art galleries, funky gift, decor and design shops.
